Taking 8"x10" Hand X-rays
Using CompuMed's Template for OsteoGram
Bone Density Analysis
Procedure:
- Position the x-ray camera so it is level
and 40 inches above the table (Source
to Image Distance) with the central x-ray perpendicular
to the table
- Position the focal spot of the x-ray on the
focal spot of exposure 1 on the hand template
with fingers pointed in cathode-to-anode direction
- Help your patient place the fingers of the
left hand as shown for exposure 1
- Place a lead shield to cover the other half
of the film or CR plate (exposure 2)
- Take one exposure using the x-ray settings
for exposure 1 (note below)
- Remove the lead shield, rotate the film or
plate 180 degrees, cover the area of exposure
1 with the lead shield and, similar to the previous
step, take a second exposure for the left hand
using the x-ray settings for exposure 2 (note
below)
- Develop the film, or insert the CR plate
into the CR reader.
The x-ray is now ready for BMD
testing using the OsteoGram system
OsteoGram x-ray settings:
The first time you take an OsteoGram hand
x-ray you may need to experiment with the settings
to optimize the results. Once the optimum settings
are determined, they can be reused thereafter
as long as the film type or CR plate are the same.
Choose x-ray settings to obtain a hand radiograph
with a background Optical Density of 1.1 0.2,
this can be verified on a light box by:
- Comparing the background of your x-ray to
the background of the provided sample x-ray
- Comparing the background of your x-ray to
an optical calibration step wedge
- Measuring the density of the background of
your x-ray using an optical densitometer
